Reports Of Many Non-Jews Hording of Passover Coke
JewishPress.com Monday, April 2, 2007 A Brooklyn grocer was stunned when two non-Jews from neighboring Bensonshurst pulled up in a van in front off his store, and bought five cases of Kosher for Passover Coca Cola with its distinctive yellow caps. Word had spread through extensive press coverage and non-stop discussions on blogs that the Passover Coke is sweetened with sugar rather than with corn syrup, the way Classic Coke used to be before the Atlanta-based soft drink company replaced sugar with corn syrup in 1985. Many Coke drinkers swear that Coke hasn’t tasted the same since.
The grocer, who had put no limit to the purchase of the Passover Coke, quickly posted a sign limiting customers to one case. In 2006, many stores had run out of the Coke well before the holiday, causing some consternation amongst customers who relied on the special run for Passover. Coke manufactures about 200,000 cases, that are shipped to grocers in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Bottlers in other cities like Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago also offer the special Passover Coke, which is under the year-round supervision of the Orthodox Union (OU). In addition to Coke, Coca-Cola also offers kosher versions of Diet Coke and Sprite and added Sprite Zero this year.
