New Web site lists Shoah assets in Israel

Some 35,000 people visited the Web site of Israel's Holocaust property restitution company and 145 people filed property claims yesterday, its first day of operation.
Representatives of The Company for Locating and Retrieving Assets of People Who Were Killed in the Holocaust, to which Holocaust victims' property must legally be turned over, said the number of Internet visitors and callers to the hotline - about 600 - far exceeded their expectations.
The Web site (www.hashava.org.il ), an English version of which is due to launch within the next two weeks, lists the assets of those who perished in the Holocaust that the company has located in Israel. All the assets listed have been transferred to the company, including some 3,000 bank accounts that had been held by the Custodian General and about 500 properties that had been held by the Custodian and the Jewish National Fund - some of which are worth millions of dollars. The company hopes to add assets currently held by public and private institutions.
Due to the influx of calls, the company decided to extend the maximum response time to 48 hours from the moment a request is received.
