Black walnut stain or dye is easy to make and can be used for everything from staining wood to dying cloth.  To make the dye, collect walnuts that have dropped to the ground. If possible, find ones whose husks have already turned a dark brown and are starting to decompose. Place several handfuls of husks into 4 cups of hot water and boil. Boil until only 2 cups of dark brown liquid remain.  This is your dye.

To make tie dye challah covers, twist your cloth in several places and secure with  rubber bands. Dip the cloth into your dye and hang to dry.   You can also use the brown husk as is, without boiling in water.  If you do this, be sure to wear gloves or your hands will turn a dark brown. To start, tape a Magen David or other design on your cloth with adhesive or electrical tape. Use the brown husk as a sponge and sponge color over and around the taped design.  When dry, lift off the tape and your design will stand out. You can leave it the color of the cloth or  color in with magic marker or crayon.
