Eriodictyon, commonly known as Yerba Santa is an aromatic shrub that grows in California, Oregon and parts of Mexico.
Native Americans reportedly used it for colds, coughs & congestion, among other things. Today, it's still used as an expectorant.
Herbal references note that Yerba Santa was smoked, chewed and drunk as a tea by Native Americans for a wide variety of ailments. Its benefits were later appreciated by the Spanish colonists who reportedly named it Yerba Santa, which means 'holy herb'. Various preparations of the herb have been used to help the body expel mucous from the chest & respiratory system, thereby relieving asthma, bronchial congestion and chest colds.
