Prayers and Blessings - Shabbat

Candle LightingRecited by the woman of the house while lighting the Shabbat candles.

Two (usually white) candles are used. One represents remembering the Shabbat and one represents keeping it kodesh. First, everyone closes thier eyes while she lights the candles. Then she spreads her hands out around the candles, drawing hands inward in a circular motion three times to indicate the acceptance of the sanctity of Shabbat. She then also covers her eyes and recites the following blessing:

Barukh atah Adonai, Elohaynu, melekh ha-olam,
ברוך אתה יי אלהינו מלך העולם
Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the Universe,

asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu
אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו
who sanctifies us with His commandments, and commands us

zah khor et yohm Shabbat l'kahd kodesh
זוכר את היום של שבת להחזיק קדש
remember the day of Shabbat to keep it holy.

After saying the blessing, she usually adds a prayer for the family. If no woman is in the house, the daughter, son, or single male should perform this blessing in her place. Candles should be lit 18 minutes before sunset to welcome in the Shabbat on 6th day evening.
